PROVENANCE
France, ebay, December 19, 2018: “Entourage de Jean Antoine Watteau . . . ou à son entourage. ‘Harlequin jaloux.’ Huile sur panneau attribuée à Jean Antoine . . . .”
REMARKS
This picture does not appear to be from the eighteenth century, much less from Pater or any other Watteau satellite.

PROVENANCE
Paris, sale, Hôtel des commissaires-priseurs, rue Drouot, January 30, 1855, lot 51: “WATTEAU (ANTOINE). . . .
Paris, collection of Monsieur E***. His sale, Paris, Hôtel des ventes mobilières, March 2, 1860, lot 32: “WATTEAU (ANTOINE) . . . Arlequin jaloux.
REMARKS
Although the wording of the 1855 text might seem vague, in fact, that catalogue provides an explicit description of Harlequin jaloux. The 1860 text is still more explicit and names the specific Watteau composition. While we cannot be certain that the two citations refer to the same painting, certain phrases (such as “écoute les propos”) suggest the one follows the other. Unfortunately, the dimensions and support are not given on either occasion, or else it might be possible to determine whether this work was Watteau’s original or, more likely, one of the extant copies.
Although Adhémar does not offer a provenance for Harlequin jaloux other than that it was in Oppenord‘s collection, she cites the 1860 sale as being the last time it was seen—thus implying that she considers Monsieur H’s painting to have been Watteau’s autograph work.

Entered June 2025
Collection of Oliver Auster, Skodsborgvej, Denmark
Oil on panel
11.2 x 8.15 cm
REMARKS
This awkward copy of Watteau’s composition accords with the direction of his painting rather than with the direction of the Chedel engraving. It is not an entirely faithful copy. The arrangement of the trees is different, the herm statue has been eliminated, and the foreground and upper reaches of the trees and sky have been reduced, resulting in a greater focus on the actors.
